Maybe you’re sick and tired of your current website. Maybe you’ve had it for a few years and it just doesn’t feel like you anymore. So how do you know when it’s time for a new website, versus maybe just time to revamp your current one a little? Here are a few questions I like to ask myself (and clients) when it comes time to consider a full on redesign project.

Does the look and feel reflect your current branding?

If you’ve recently underwent a complete rebranding or if you’ve pivoted within your industry or changed up your business in a really big way, that might be a nice indicator that it’s time to start fresh. Sometimes it can be really difficult to think outside of the context of the original design, and so a fresh design start can be especially helpful.

Are you able to easily make changes to your site’s content yourself?

If you’re stuck on a platform that you can’t easily update (like a purely HTML/CSS based website or a content management system like Drupal), then it might be a sign that it’s time to switch over to something you can regularly make changes to or add content to yourself. This, of course, really depends on whether or not that’s even important to you: if you’re perfectly content calling in your developer when it’s time to update, then you might just want to leave it be! But, if you’re constantly wishing you could go in and make little tweaks here and there yourself, then I’d definitely consider a redesign over to a platform that you can better manage yourself.

Does your site look a little outdated compared to your competition?

If you shudder when it comes time to share your website because it just doesn’t stack up to your competitors, that’s a surefire sign you should be considering a total redo. If you’re not proud to flaunt your current site and, as a result, don’t share it with the world, then you’re not doing yourself or your biz any favors.

How does your site look on mobile devices?

It’s SO important that your site look great no matter what device it’s being accessed on. If your site is still loading up the full desktop version on mobile, then that’s a pretty good indicator that it’s time for something new. A lot of times with the WordPress sites I work on, it’s often easier (and cheaper) to go with a total redesign using a new, responsive theme, versus trying to make an old theme responsive.

Is there any functionality you’re just itching to have, but can’t with your current site?

Maybe you’d like to have event registration or maybe a simple calendar, but it’s just not easily possible with your current site. If you’re chomping at the bit to add in new functionality but simply can’t with your current site/platform, then it’s definitely time to look into something more flexible/extendable.

Hopefully this helps provide a little clarity into whether or not it’s time for a website redesign! If need some additional guidance, please feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to talk through your frustrations with your existing website and answer any questions you might have!
